Professional experience

a)    Registered Professional Engineer.

b)    Founded the consulting engineering and management firm, Steyn & Van Rensburg, specializing in electrical, mechanical and structural engineering projects, as well as project management (1970-1992).

c)    Appointed Senior Lecturer in Business Economics at the University of South Africa (UNISA). Permission was granted by the university authorities to continue as a partner in the consulting  firm (1971).

d)    Appointed Professor of Business Economics at UNISA (1976).

e)    During 20 years as a partner in the consulting firm, over 2000 projects were completed by Steyn & Van Rensburg. Major projects are, inter alia, Game City and The Wheel in Durban, Mandela Square, Standard Bank Head Office, First National Bank’s Bank City Complex in Johannesburg, and the new campus development, Teacher’s Training College, in Pretoria (now the Faculty of Education, University of Pretoria).

f)     Founded the Production Management Institute (PMI) of South Africa, and became Founder Chairman of the Institute (1977).

g)    Chairman of the Commission of Enquiry into the Public Service Conditions of Service and Salaries, by the Swaziland Minister of Labour and Public Service in collaboration with the Swaziland National Association of Civil Servants and the Swaziland National Association of Teachers. The terms of reference of the Commission included, inter alia, determining the productivity and performance of the Civil Service (1993).

h)    Project leader for the Strategic Management exercise of the Gauteng Ministry of Welfare and Population Development. The Strategic Management Plan was completed during April 1995. It involved a consultative process in which employees of the organisation and stakeholder organisations participated. In addition to the strategic goals and objectives, the preferred organisational culture and ethos were developed. An organisational behaviour study was conducted to determine shortcomings in the organisation. Implementation and institutionalisation of the Strategic Management Plan followed during 1995 – 1996 (1994).

i)    President of the Association of Project Management South Africa (2000 – 2004).

Present positions

  • Founder and Principal of Cranefield College of Project and Programme Management, a South African Council on Higher Education / Dept of Education accredited and registered Private Higher Education Institution offering an Advanced Certificate, Advanced Diploma, Postgraduate Diploma, Master of Commerce Degree, and a PhD Degree.
  • Retired from the University of Pretoria and appointed Emeritus Professor (1998).
  • Director of De Doornkraal Boutique Hotel and Aan’t Vette Wine Estate, Riversdale, Western Cape.
